9780989497305: Public Secrets and Justice: A Journal of a Circuit Court Judge

Public Secrets and Justice: A Journal of a Circuit Court Judge By Laura Melvin Through the lens of her private thoughts and feelings, the author, a retired Circuit Judge from Florida, describes her view from the Bench. Many of the cases she depicts involve children – children who were believed and then protected by the adults they trusted, and those who were not. Other court cases involve ordinary and extraordinary people who came seeking justice. Witnesses are often required to tell in public their darkest secrets, and this is particularly true of child victims. Laura’s stories include secrets – a few of her own as well as some she was privileged to hear from the Bench –to share the lessons of the immeasurable value of listening and believing. Laura candidly describes her professional struggles to do justice, including her decision to impose the death penalty twice. There are many interpretations of “justice,” and in the book she hopes to challenge the certainty of your own definition. To provide a framework for these stories, Laura tells her own story as a female in the Deep South, raised in a conservative culture with strict expectations. Laura describes the turmoil and uncertainty that led to her decision to leave the Bench after ten years, and she takes the reader on her extended solo RV trip around the country.

About the Author:

Laura Melvin was appointed as Circuit Judge by the Governor of Florida to fill the unexpired term of a judge who was killed in an accident; she was then re-elected twice to that position. She served as a judge for 10 years sitting in each of the divisions of Circuit Court: Criminal (felonies that include serious drug crimes, burglary, rape, and murder), Juvenile (children who have been abused or neglected and those charged with a crime), Family (divorce, custody, child support), Civil (personal injury and wrongful death, contract, business, etc.), and Probate (wills and trusts). She taught extensively in the Florida Advanced Judicial College and the New Judges’ College and wrote a bench book for judges on Juvenile Law. A graduate of Florida State College of Law, she practiced law for 10 years before going on the Bench. In her retirement she enjoys traveling extensively in her RV. While on the Bench, Laura began skydiving; a few years later she stopped skydiving after 600 jumps and became an avid motorcyclist. She is an instructor with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation and has published several articles with Rider Magazine, including 4 Corners 4 Kids in the June 2013 issue that describes her 13,000 mile solo ride on a Goldwing around the four geographic corners of the United States to raise awareness of and money for four child-focused charities. See her Facebook page 4 Corners 4 Kids and website www.gypsyjudge.com.
