The mesmerizing debut novel from a new author!
One night after dinner Catarina Perez gets into an argument with her sister and parents and storms out of the restaurant to walk home and blow off steam. And that's the last thing she remembers.
Waking up in an alley several hours later, Catarina can't remember anything that's happened to her after leaving her family at the restaurant. But worse than that is the realization that she's covered in blood. Someone else's blood. And the "someone else" is lying dead in the alley next to her.
After fleeing the alley where she awoke, Catarina's body begins to undergo a transformation that she doesn't understand. She had always been athletic, but now she can sprint for miles without breaking a sweat. Her five-foot-one-inch frame was never known for strength, and now punching through solid oak doors isn't even a challenge. Her body isn't just developing speed and strength, though. All five senses have begun to reach new heights of sensitivity, too. She can hear a person's heartbeat from across the room or see in absolute darkness like it was a brightly lit and sunny day.
Catarina is developing powers beyond her wildest dreams, but she is discovering that they come with some drawbacks. She has to wear sunglasses during the day to cut back on the light, all food is beginning to lose its taste and her heightened sense of smell has made gym class unbearable. Oh, and there's one other thing...she's developed an uncontrollable urge to eat other humans. There's that, too.
As Catarina slowly adjusts to her new powers and what she must do to keep them at bay, she realizes that sometimes you have to accept a little evil in your life in order to accomplish the greater good. For what's a little immeasurable power if all it will cost you is your soul?

Catharsis is D. Andrew Campbell's first novel. He has loved being a junior high teacher for over fourteen years and continues to teach seventh grade English in Fishers, Indiana.
His free time is split between making up stories to tell his students (some people call it "teaching"), playing sports (cross country, wrestling, soccer and basketball) and spending time with his family and two daughters (Kailey and Jenna).
The completion of this book is just one more way he can teach his students that every dream is achievable once you commit to it!
