This novel is set in Mexico in 1972 during the Soviet Union’s Iron Curtain era of restriction and retribution. It is the story of Charles, an American architect on temporary assignment there, and of Anna, a Russian translator at the Russian Embassy, who meet, fall in love, plan her defection, and in the execution of her attempt to escape, are plunged into the dark and dangerous arena of intrigue, betrayal and murder. To complicate matters, Anna’s predecessor, Natasha, was found murdered at Chapultepec Park, and the alleged suspect, at least in everyone’s mind, is Anna’s current Russian bodyguard, Alexei. It appears Natasha had fallen in love also with a local university student and made an attempt to defect herself with his help. And to make things worse, it seems that in Charles and Anna’s attempt to find a safe hiding place, most people they meet seem to have something to hide. Whether it is infidelity, financial misdeeds, covert revolutionary activities, or just plain hidden agendas. And the relentless pursuit by the Russian, Alexei, who has hidden reasons of his own, presents a seemingly impossible obstacle to their freedom. So, whom can they really trust? The core of this story relies on the cultural and emotional conflict between the international cast of protagonists, and the unexpected complexities they place on the forbidden love and flight of Anna and Charles.
