"Everything's bigger in Texas. Even the Secrets." How many family sagas have you read that include a murder mystery in Texas, an epic romance in Japan, tragedy on the cobblestone streets of Paris, and cliff-diving witchy-women in Mexico? Nicholas Bridwell's debut novel is about five families who couldn't be more different coming together as a community when tragedy strikes their neighborhood. From there, the story branches out into generations as we explore the fascinating lives of a young painter, a French baker, a factory worker's beautiful Japanese wife, and a vindictive mistress who is one of the finest, most complex women in all of literature. The story starts with a man with a severed leg limping through the woods. Where it ends will leave you breathless.

From the Author:

I was originally challenged by a friend to write about different cultures when he observed that most of my stories were about white men. I accepted the challenge and the result was The Ties That Bind, a book with over 60 characters and all of them diverse in spirit.I wrote The Ties That Bind over the course of two-and-a-half years from 2011-2014. I consider it an "ensemble" piece. I wanted to write something with many characters and many viewpoints. However, you'll probably notice it is bookended with a certain protagonist named Rufus and that's where you'll find most of my character. Some of the characters are based on family and friends. Some are born of imagination. In regards to setting, I did a lot of research about Paris, Japan, and Mexico. I have traveled to Paris and various parts of Mexico. Japan was all research (for now!).I was born in a small suburb of a city called Corpus Chriti, TX. We didn't have near the diversity that you'll see in the book. We did have a pointless racial divide between the "whites" and the "Hispanics". I learned very early on that it was from joining together that we were most wonderful as a community. The families in The Ties That Bind have to learn to grow as a community to solve a murder mystery. I was fortunate not to have that particular tragedy happen, but I did see how communities came together for the deaths of family and friends. That informed the book.Writing a family saga was important to me, because I wanted to show the generational differences and how different cultures come together. I also wanted to show the difficult aspects of family life and how some families overcome difficulties and some are torn apart by these difficulties. In the end, the book is about the choices we make in life and how they impact everyone around us.Thanks so much for reading my novel. I thoroughly enjoy reading your reviews and chatting with you about your thoughts. --Nick
