The Healing Hand was written with the intent to be by your side as you support a loved one who is ill. Though this book was originally intended to be in the hospital room, healing often takes place outside the hospital walls. Whether you are a professional or someone who is supporting a loved one who is ill, The Healing Hand has something to teach as well as provide comfort and guidance. As such, it is not meant to be an academic tome rather, something you can pick up, get some information from the narrative or pictures, and perhaps read one page that will inspire you for this particular moment in time.

Sue Knight Deutsch has served for over 15 years as the spiritual leader and chaplain of an assisted living facility in Orange County, California. She counsels and reaches out to those who are ill or at the end of life. Originally trained as a psychiatric social worker, after raising her children she studied music and liturgy, was invested as a member of the Cantors Assembly and further trained in hospice care. With all her training, it was her experience of losing her husband to cancer in mid-life that deepened her calling and motivated her to reach out to help others beyond her pulpit and ultimately brought about this book.Review:
So few of us are schooled in the art of loving someone as they move toward death...and yet it is just at that time, when those we care for have but moments left, that we most wish to love, to know what to do and how to be in their presence. The Healing Hand offers a template for that time; direct heart-felt guidance that provides us with a clear sense of what we might say and how we might move toward the dying to bring about healing and a sense of ease. Linking each finger to crucial elements of care (gratitude, forgiveness, kindness, and letting go) we are reminded of how truly simple it can be to love and how the power to do so literally rests no further than our hands. --Maria Sirois, Psy.D., author of Every Day Counts
This is a beautiful, heart-felt as well as hands-on account of how to honor the last threshold of life with the ones we have loved. It is written from the "trenches of reality" with touching accounts of the most trying situtations with real people. I am deeply appreciative of the fact that this volume is written from within the solid contours of contemporary Jewish tradition. It lends credibility and power to the narrative. At the same time, this work reaches out into the universal and can touch the heart of anyone, anywhere. --Rick Jarow, PhD, author of Alchemy of Abundance
