From the Author:

As a first-time author, I followed tried-and-true advice and wrote about something I know. From racing to towing the kids around the block, I've been cycling, in one form or another, for over 40 years.

My love for the sport started in Boulder, Colorado. I moved there after college to work for Frank Shorter, the Olympic marathon champion, who was opening a running shoe store. Although I was a runner and I had retail experience, it turned out that he decided to hire only world-class runners to work in the store, so that left me out! Nonetheless, I managed to find work in town, and ended up living and working with a number of cyclists who piqued my interest and inspired me to give it a try.

With great weather and the Rocky Mountains nearby, Boulder was a magnet for cycling. I would sometimes find myself in group training rides with Tour de France stage winners like Davis Phinney, or Olympic gold medalists like Alexi Grewal and Connie Carpenter. Throw in the Olympic training center down the road in Colorado Springs, and the local Red Zinger and Coors Classic bike races, and it was the perfect storm of exposure and influence for an impressionable newbie.

Although I never advanced beyond being a lower-category middle-of-the-pack racer, I'll never forget struggling up 14,240 ft. high Mt. Evans, or watching a young Greg LeMond lap the field in a local race, or exploring remote mountain trails on some of the very first mountain bikes.

The excitement and sense of wonder of those days have never left me, and I relive parts of them every time I ride my bike.

Despite my competitive background, this is not a book about racing. It is also not an encyclopedia, a maintenance manual, or a scientific training treatise. It is an all-purpose guide written from a practical, common-sense point of view, and it is based entirely on my personal experiences. It covers a broad range of subjects, but you'll find it is a pretty quick read - hence the title, The Short-Attention-Span Guide to Cycling. There is enough detail that you can feel well informed, but you won't be overwhelmed with geeky nomenclature or technical details that you may never care about.

Thanks for your interest, and have a great ride!

Jeff Schatz

From the Back Cover:

"There are plenty of reasons to ride a bike - and I hope you find one - but in my mind it's all about permission to escape from our busy lives for a little while, and to stop and smell the chain grease."

"I've found that most shops have at least one veteran salesperson or owner that knows their stuff. Avoid the part-time, minimum-wage clerk and seek out this expert."

"If you pick the wrong type of bike, you won't ride it; instead, it will end up for sale on craigslist, along with your barbells and ugly couch."

"Don't get too carried away with the number of gears. You will only use about 6 of them."

"While you may be forced to pick a price range, don't make your bike choice based on frame materials. They are all more or less equal in quality. It's kind of like art. Masterpieces have been executed in acrylic paint, watercolor paint, and oil paint. One medium is not inherently better than the others. Base your decision on the feel of the ride."

"Maybe the most contentious component is the seat (saddle), especially for beginners, or those who have been away from riding for some time. The bottom line (pardon the pun) is that there are no perfect seats. They all hurt at one time or another."

"You have a right to be on the road, but don't be obnoxious or militant. There is a lot of pent-up road rage out there, and many drivers would like nothing more than to take it out on you."

"Training is very specific. If all you ride are sprints, your body will adapt to that activity; if all you do is long, slow rides, it will adapt to that. For maximum fitness and quicker improvement, mix up your routine (add hills!) and "shock" different muscles."

"Meeting goals is very fulfilling. Break them down into small increments so they become easier to accomplish. No aspiring marathoner ever started by running 26.2 miles."

"This may be a good place to pass on some sage advice I got years ago from a cycling expert. He suggested that instead of spending $4000 dollars to buy a new bike that is 3 pounds lighter, just lose 3 pounds - or more!"

"Let's get this out of the way first. Bike racing is hard. It's not something you can just jump into like a local 5K charity run, or a mass bike rally. It takes dedication, lots of hard work, guts, and the ability to ignore - or embrace - pain. Still interested? Read on."

"I used to bring my bike right into the office via the elevator and lean it against my workspace. I never bothered to ask the facilities manager, probably because she would have said no."

"The little break (or big one) in the day that a ride provides can help you feel better, physically and mentally. Who doesn't want that?"
