A perfect gift for cat lovers!
From a gutter in the Bronx to a fancy condo in Manhattan and summer weekends in the Hamptons, THEY CALL ME DESTINY is the heart-warming story of the first year in the life of an orphaned kitten and the woman who adopted her. It is an ironic take on the 60s and us human beings from the point-of-view of this extraordinary cat.
As Destiny explains-- Fern and I came into each others lives when we both desperately needed someone who would care and understand. We laugh together in this book and sometimes cry together, but most of all we love each other. Who knew our story would eventually span more than a decade, include a cross-country move, and be covered in 3 books known as the Destiny Trilogy!
It wasn't always a smooth journey but we survived and flourished. Eventually Fern went on to become an award-winning TV producer -- and I became an author. Enjoy the read!

By Katniss, Cat Reporter June 26, 2015 THEY CALL ME DESTINY Cats these days star in their own YouTube videos, model for Instagram accounts and Facebook pages - some even have their own blogs so it was only a matter of time before the feline frenzy expanded to the world of litter-ature. When I came across this meowmoir written by a rescue cat, I was instantly intrigued. They Call Me Destiny by Destiny Kalser with Fern Field Brooks is a pawsitively enjoyable read. Destiny tells how she was found by two little girls after her mother was killed in a hit-and-run. The girls hide her in a chicken coop, afraid to tell the adults for fear that they won't be allowed to keep her. But when the poor orphaned kitten is discovered, the girls kindly Human relative realizes it must be destiny. Destiny the Cat's purrsonal story includes many adventures moving from a farm to a Manhattan townhouse, weekend trips to the Hamptons in a Jaguar (nothing like the big cat!), and even becoming a mother (this was the 60s, before spay-and-neuter was the norm). More than just a meowmoir, this book is really a love letter from a cat to the Human who took her in and gave her a home and a wonderful life. You know that warm, fuzzy feeling you get when a cat sits on your laps, purrs and stares at you with squinty eyes? That s the way this book will make you feel. If you've ever rescued or loved a cat, this book is for you. --cat blogger
by MaryAnn Miller Review: First I have to say that I was drawn to the book by the picture of Destiny on the cover. I have two black cats who were rescued, and my Hermione looks a great deal like Destiny. Now after reading the book, I wonder if their voices are the same, too. I was also very interested in reading a book written from a cat's point of view that encompassed more than what one might find in a children's book. This one did that and did not disappoint. It is a nice blending of two lives, a cat's and a woman's, and they both have experiences that challenge them greatly. While the story is engaging, and the reader will be pulling for Destiny through all the ups and downs she faces with Fern, as an editor I struggled a bit with some of the narrative. Information was repeated in the first few chapters, and some of the language was stilted. This is in sharp contrast to the parts of the book that work so well, especially Destiny as a character and narrator. She is expertly personified in the book. There is also a strong message of love and loyalty that comes through the story and touches the heart of an animal lover. I dare anyone to come to the end and not smile. --cat blogger
By Re'Gena Bell-Roberts November 29, 2015 Destiny captured my heart. They Call me Destiny is a fascinating and heart-warming story that will open your senses and allow you to experience life from her (Destiny's) perspective. She is a bright and witty cat with a colorful personality. Rising from poverty to a privileged status, Destiny is a true survivor. I could barely put the book down wondering what was to happen next. Thank you Fern for sharing Destiny with the world. --author/actress
