Discovering historical contributions to science and industry by people of color and their historical lineage of technology encompasses a multi-cultural arc of people, patterns of events, and time periods. The purpose of this book is to provide information on a selection of significant inventions, innovations, and discoveries offered to the world by people of color. Forgotten were the legacies of ancient people who populated lands in Africa, the Far East, Near East and the Americas. And whose contributions to science and innovation were often relegated to the anonymous bin of prehistory. This timely reference book endeavors to help change all of that. Inventions and Discoveries by People of Color make available a rich selective compilation for 21st century general readers and casual scholars alike.

Review:

"Gilchrist's stated purpose is for his work to be a starting point for those interested in pursuing in-depth research about technological history. Although the author writes in his introduction that items span from prehistoric times to modern day and cover basic discoveries as well as practical inventions, the emphasis is clearly on innovations by ancient people of color who populated Africa, the Far East, the Near East, and the early Americas. By far, the largest number of entries cover ancient Egypt. Articles are organized alphabetically, with each discovery described briefly to include country of origin, date and the general category under which it falls. An additional book or other reference for suggested reading is listed at the end of each explanation. The work concludes with four indexes and cited references. Comprehensive indexes make finding any entry a snap and are the work's best feature. Other strengths are the number of entries and organization, although longer summaries and a greater number of suggestions for additional reading could have made the presentation even stronger. Nevertheless, the work is brining with fascinating facts that may change the perspectives of many and stimulate the interest of most. VERDICT A solid choice for browsers in need of a basic, brief and general information resource." --Library Journal

" A concise well ordered resource on technological and everyday breakthroughs, Dr. Kelvin K. Gilchrist's illustrated A to Z listing enlightens readers on the extent of innovation from the nonwhite world. A basic perusal of ingenuity, the compendium covers such essentials as the water well and rudder along with the mandrake, loadstone, obelisk, and mathematical cipher as a glimpse of human advancement in pharmaceuticals, magnetism, and architecture. Black-and-white drawings detail the simplicity of the digging stick, the intricacy of weaving, essential part of an African glider and the inner structure of the Egyptian pyramid. For the student teacher, bulletin board and project planner, and home school students, a topic finder itemizes vending machines and suspension bridges under "mechanical," eohippus and maize under "agriculture," and the armillary, compass, and solar calendar under "astronomy." Curious students will gain perspective on world history from the timeline, which places in order of invention such valuable entities as the numeral system, clepsydra, and encyclopedia. Without lecture or reprimand, Gilchrist's slim volume teaches a host of lessons about the contributions of all races to progress. Highly recommended for middle school libraries and professional reference shelves." --Voices of Youth Advocate(VOYA)
