Synopsis

When the author's sixteen-year-old daughter asked about testosterone injections and chest surgery, her immediate reaction was to slow down the speeding train about to rip her daughter away. What loomed like a permanent loss, a death for her, felt like a long-awaited birth for her child. My Daughter He: Transitioning With Our Transgender Children, describes the interior journey one mother took to let go of her beloved daughter so she could welcome her son. Based on the author's research in the field, the book also brings together the necessary information parents need to aid in the decision-making process while raising their gender nonconforming or transgender child. Offering concrete information for parents as well as reflections on what the author got right and what she wishes she did differently will help other parents on a similar path in what is as yet uncharted territory.

About the Author

As a feminist and women's health administrator, educator, and public policy advocate I loved having daughters. Gender equality was the foundation of my professional pursuits. But I was emotionally unprepared when my adolescent daughter spiraled into depression and eventually disclosed she longed to be male. I began writing to answer the question, Why all the tears? As both a story and a resource book with information and references, I hope My Daughter He helps other parents be better equipped and more informed than I was when parenting their nonconforming or transgender children.

From the Back Cover

My Daughter He: Transitioning With Our Transgender Children is written by a mother reflecting on her own difficult journey to accept that her beloved daughter longed to be a boy. By honestly exploring the author's own deep-seated feelings and how they interfered with her ability to align with and advocate for her child, readers are invited to attend to their own emotional responses while supporting their child's authentic self-expression. My Daughter He is also filled with resources. If you are the parent of a gender nonconforming child, you may wonder whether this is a phase. For many young children it is, but how do you know what's true for your child and when is it time to seek help? Other informative topics include:
· Gender identity development and early clues to watch for in your child
· Finding the right team of professionals to guide your decisions
· Reversible and irreversible treatment options and when to begin them
· Networking with other parents to create supportive schools and communities
With younger children disclosing their transgender identity, and medical options for preteens that have positive lifelong benefits, parent decision-making has never been more urgent. My Daughter He is a valuable handbook to guide you.
