A Group Therapist's Guide to Process Addictions

9780991494606: A Group Therapist's Guide to Process Addictions

This manual has been written primarily for the group psychotherapist who is not necessarily an expert in addictions and who will benefit from gaining a basic understanding of process addictions and their treatment. The manual is divided into five modules: Module One-"Understanding Process Addictions:" Defines and describes the phenomenon of process addictions. It explores the neuroscience of process addictions, as well as some of the controversies surrounding the current status of process addictions in the medical and scientific community. Module Two-"Recovery Principles and the Therapeutic Process:" Presents what the authors believe to be universal principles of addiction treatment, and outlines the process of recovery. Module Three-"Group Psychotherapy and the Recovery Process:" Explores the basic types of therapeutic groups and adjunctive treatments useful in treating process addictions. Module Four-"Specific Process Addictions:" Examines several potentially addictive processes from the perspective of the group psychotherapist. Module Five-"Special Topics:" Discusses the role of the therapist in addiction treatment, training and supervision, and ethical and legal issues. Objectives are offered at the beginning of each module, and Tables and Sidebars, Key Points, Exercises, Questions and Answers, Suggested Readings, and References, are offered at the end. The Appendices, Treatment Resources, and Index appear after Module Five. This manual is designed to help group psychotherapists recognize these maladaptive behavioral processes and guide their patients in recovery. The authors have combined their clinical experience, experience of the twelve step community, and a survey of the emerging literature in the field. This work can guide the psychotherapist in treating members of their psychotherapy groups who struggle with one or more of these processes, as well as the psychotherapist who chooses to target a single process addiction for a focused group.
