9780992661038: From University To The South Pole: The International Scott Centenary Expedition

Henry Evans was in the second year of his Marine Biology degree when a routine visit to the university gym opened up an ‘opportunity-of-a-lifetime’.

On being nationally selected to trek to the South Pole as part of the two man International Scott Centenary Expedition (ISCE), Henry was launched into the tough realities of polar training and the world of media - from live BBC television interviews to meeting with David Attenborough to running fundraising marathons in a penguin costume. And that’s before he set off for the South Pole!

Henry describes this remarkable journey and its links with the celebrated polar explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott, including his own diary and breath-taking photos. With additional expert contributions, including Dafila Scott, the grand-daughter of Captain Scott, and polar veteran and fellow expedition member Geoff Somers MBE, this book is an informative, humorous and inspirational story that has so far reached over two million people worldwide.

About the Author:

Henry Evans is a 23 year old marine biologist, science communicator, a writer for the Daily Telegraph and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. He recently completed the two man International Scott Centenary Expedition to the South Pole, to celebrate the centenary of Captain Scott’s Terra Nova Expedition of 1912, arriving at the Pole on the 5th of January 2013. It proved to be a life-changing experience and he has since visited over 100 schools throughout Europe, USA, Southeast Asia and China, personally reaching out to over 100,000 students.

Henry now runs his own company to inspire and educate others through its live, learn, laugh ethos. With his passion for exploration and education he continues to explore the world, working in marine biology and education, to help increase awareness of the importance of Antarctica to the progression of present day science, conservation and our understanding of our planet’s future.

Henry is a global ambassador for Plymouth University and recently obtained a 150th anniversary year scholarship from Plymouth University for Outstanding Achievement, and was also nominated in the “Outstanding Student” category at the 2012 Vice-Chancellor Awards.
