John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, was a controversial figure in the second half of the 18th century. Member of an aristocratic family, he served in the Army, fighting for the English against the Scots, and rose to be First Lord of the Admiralty. He sponsored Captain Cook's second expedition and Cook named the Sandwich Islands after him. The Earl was also involved in the visit to Britain of Omai, a native of Tahiti, who was feted throughout London society. The 4th Earl loved music and was a patron of Handel. After separating from his wife in 1755 he started a relationship with a singer, Martha Ray, with whom he had five surviving children. But in 1779 she was murdered by an infatuated clergyman. The Earl's best-known legacy is the piece of meat between two slices of bread which his servant used to make when the Earl was working late at the Admiralty. This became known as a 'sandwich' and the name has lasted to this day.
