Shingas

9780993583117: Shingas

After six years of bloody conflict the war between France and England was over and Canada had a new ruler, King George the third. But for Shingas the fight against the English was not finished and after witnessing the brutal murder of his warriors by a company of redcoats at fort Detroit, his desire for revenge burned like a fire in his heart. Meanwhile, two hundred miles to the east on an isolated farmstead, Esther an indentured servant, wooed by the prospect of being released from the shackles of servitude, agrees to marry the farmers eldest son, a simpleton, in exchange for her freedom. Unwittingly fate was to bring them together and on the day of her wedding Esther is abducted by the savage war-chief and taken as a captive back to his village. Befriended by an old squaw and a young French girl, a captive like herself, Esther accepts her plight and is quickly assimilated into her new life. All this changes when, seeing her bathing, Shingas forces himself on her. Horrified by this violation, when she is given the opportunity to escape she seizes her chance and together with the young French girl she makes her bid for freedom. But her hopes are quickly dashed when pursued by Shingas, she is captured and brought back to the village. Nine months later she gives birth to his child, a boy. With discontent growing amongst the tribes as the English settlements encroach ever deeper into their lands, Shingas leads an attack against an English fort and after killing all inside he burns it to the ground. Roused into action and determined to subdue this uprising and to punish those responsible, the English send an army under the command of Colonel Bouquet against them. And so deep in the wilderness at a place called Bushy Run, redskins and redcoats are joined in battle and in the space of a single day the fate of a nation is decided and so too is the fate of Esther and her child.

About the Author:

Barry Cole was born in Yorkshire but spent much of his adult life in Bedfordshire. He served as a regular soldier for eleven years and after leaving the army, as a hobby began contributing stories and articles to the monthly magazines published by two Native American Charities. As well as writing he also had a great affection for films and after taking a two year course at the London Screenwriters Workshop he began writing feature length film scripts. Over the course of several years he completed five screenplays which he is now in the process of adapting into novels, the first of these being Shingas which was completed and self published in October this year. He has also written a children's book entitled The Time Bandit and is currently working on a second children's book, The Conquistador's Horse, a sample chapter of which appears after the Appendix in The Time Bandit.  He is presently living on a narrow boat named Tranquilty moored on the Grand Union canal in Northamptonshire.

Review:

Shingas is a highly competently constructed novel of undoubted quality. It is written in a very sophisticated and polished way but in a way that is highly readable. There is a simplicity to the prose while the lack of any superfluous affections makes for a succinct and always enjoyable reading experience. The structure of the book is very good indeed with an intense narrative that can be both genuinely charming and  full of personality, while also being hard-hitting when it needs to be. The foundation of the story is set down at the beginning of the novel and while the action-packed and entertaining plot is enough to keep the reader engaged, it's really the cast of intriguing characters like Esther that elevates Shingas to another level and makes it such a joy to read. Yanina Goldenberg Gold Wind Limited

This is a book I enjoyed reading very much which is quite interesting since this is not a book I would have automatically chosen to read, which speaks volumes for its quality in holding my attention literally from first chapter to last. For a book of this kind it is unusually multi-layered with deep themes which are very thought provoking. The setting and background are dealt with extremely competently creating an environment for the plot that is exceptionally realistic and authentic. A good book should also have a plot that progresses upwards with a series of twists, turns and setbacks. This is basically the case with this book with both Shingas and Esther faced with problems each has to overcome. It is also important to keep the reader guessing in terms of the ending, and I have to confess that I did not see the ending coming at all. Critical is convincing characterization, and while there is a tendency in this type of book for some of the peripheral characters to be given less attention, here they are realistic and appear as real people. But it is the characters of Shingas and Esther who create the powerful emphatic response from the reader. In summery, this is as good a book in the genre (and as good a book generally) as I have read for some time, itis exceptionally well written and constructed and very authentic.
