This just released monograph on the life and career of artist, Serena Bocchino spans 25 years. Written by Art Historian Lisa A. Banner, Art Writer and Critic, Jonathan Goodman, Edited by Chinese Art Specialist, Lily Zhang, and includes a foreword by Curator, Kathleen Goncharov. In the book, Serena Bocchino the Artist, Goodman sites Bocchino's art historical influences of the New York School and the Abstract Expressionists. This informal group of American poets, painters, dancers, and musicians active in the 1950s and 1960s in New York City was influential to Bocchino's development as an artist. Her work is directly influenced by jazz, dance, and poetry. Missing Mingus (2012) for musician Charlie Mingus, is evidence of the influence of jazz to her work. The recent work of 2015, like Soar, Over It, and Unforgettable is related to dance and music. Furthermore, Bocchino's visual effects can be described not only as musical but also as poetic. Goodman further describes the "Twirl" series in particular as enhanced by its poetic impressions; Bocchino's paintings reveal a connection in the imaginative energy of the imagery, which salutes the adventurous spirit of American creativity. Bocchino's recent works demonstrate an ongoing evolution that is exciting to witness. With nearly three decades of work already under her belt, she is proving why we shouldn't take our eyes off her, her work has always more to discover.
