Behind the Shades tells the story of the life of a female agent entering the male dominated world of the Secret Service. It is a story of personal sacrifice, adventure, acceptance and rejection, tenacity, endurance, and hard work during trying times. Sue Ann Baker was on the front lines of history and observed it being made on a larger scale. She is one of the pioneers who paved the way for the many capable female agents that followed in her footsteps, and I am proud to say I served with her. Clinton J. About the Author

In 1968, with a degree from Ohio University under her belt and all her worldly belongings in a trailer, Sue Ann set off for Washington, DC to start her career as a...what? She had no life plan and was just happy to find work, finally embracing the exciting world of law enforcement as a DC cop earning $8000 a year. In her book Behind the Shades, she describes her journey from DC cop to becoming one of the first five female agents in the elite US Secret Service in 1971. During the 1972 presidential campaign she crisscrossed the county protecting presidential hopeful Shirley Chisholm and Senator George McGovern’s wife, Eleanor. A thirteen day, ten country trip to the Middle East with the Secretary of the Treasury, William Simon and his wife, was a highlight of her career. In 1973, as the first “girl agent” transferred out of DC, she drove across country in her red Datsun 240Z to her new field office in California. A year later, she made the difficult decision to leave the Secret Service and launch a new career as a private investigator in LA. By 1976, she’d met her husband and moved to the carnival paradise of St. Thomas, USVI. They were clueless about sailing, when they bought a forty foot Mariner ketch appropriately named, Love Song. After two hurricanes in ten days almost blew them off the boat, they stopped cruising down island and dropped anchor back in St. Thomas. Opening a security company they were quickly hired by Lloyds of London to investigate boat thefts and sinkings in the Caribbean. By 1984 Sue Ann had enough of paradise, heat, and humidity. Love Song became someone else’s melody, and they shipped their belongings to Florida. Driving across county again (this time in a red 3/4 ton pick-up) they landed in Oregon and bought twenty-two acres on a mountain top to build the house of their dreams. Of course, neither one of them had ever built a house before, but they drew plans on a napkin, hired a framer, and navigated the thousand choices that must be made as general contractors. Sue Ann worked as an advertising sales manager for a local newspaper for five years. Then in 1992, she finally figured out what she wanted to do when she grew up. She fell in love with financial planning. Twenty-two years and hundreds of clients later, Sue Ann retired as a financial advisor in 2013. A speaker and author, Sue Ann is uniquely qualified to share her story of overcoming fear and building confidence to become the alpha woman she was born to be.
