9780996162005: The Settler: A novel of modern Israel

The journey of a good girl to glittery party girl

Tel Aviv. Israel's very own city of sin. And for Sarah Dakar, the metropolis becomes just that once she is evacuated from her home in Gush Katif, Gaza by the army she once loved and admired -- an army to which her brother lost his life. She never believed the "Expulsion" -- as she called this historic 2005 event -- would happen. As she settles in Tel Aviv to begin university while her family adjusts to life in government housing, she begins to question the values she once held dear: belief in God and the Jewish state. The dance floor of the world-famous Tel Aviv nightclub, Atlantis, provides fertile ground for the rebel-in-waiting. Its liberal and charismatic owner, Ziv Harel, is more than glad to transform a "religious settler" into a nightlife queen .Their mysterious attraction leads both on a path of self-discovery, but how far will Sarah go to question who she is - and at what cost?

˃˃˃ Modern Israel comes to life through love, romance, dance, and music

Don't visit or live in Israel without reading this book! Gain insights into Israeli society, politics and it's vibrant nightlife scene through the journey of an intellectually curious young woman who is moved to challenge everything dear to her once she is forced to leave her home in Gush Katif.

Review:

"And while the disengagement itself is a compelling story, and the landscapes of Gush Katif, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv are settings rich with personality, Arfa goes further, setting music - the composition, study, remuneration and enjoyment of it - as a barometer for measuring the evolution and redemption of the characters." - Laura Kelly, Jerusalem Post

"The novel is beautifully written." - Rick Richman, Jewish Current Issues

"Arfa executes the difficult balance between sociopolitical commentary and human development artfully, avoiding veering into caricature with grace and humor....Why can't we have more novels like this?" - Tova Dvorin, Israel National News

"An unconventional novel." - Yedioth Aharonot, Israel's leading daily

Arfa's words of great power sweep you into a deep, emotional connection with Sarah Dakar. While it's a political novel, anyone can relate to the plot, the pain, the loss, and the insights along the way, to the price each character pays, and to the human story told with great sensitivity. - Shira Goldberg, Prestige Magazine (Israel)
