Eddie is a highly respected and somewhat feared surfer in the waves along the Ventura, California coastline. He's also a feared husband, being verbally abusive and neglectful of his pregnant wife. But with the birth of his child, Eddie meets Travis, an overweight and out of shape computer nerd who dotes on his wife through her labor and delivery, and Eddie recognizes the need to be more like him.
Dr. Kleinman is the obstetrician delivering these infants, and he's also the obstetrician for the wife of another surfer: Nathan. But the birth of Nathan's child sets in motion tragic events that will inextricably weave these individuals and their families into the most unlikely of friendships.
Friendships that will provide support and direction for these men as they struggle with fatherhood, but friendships that will ultimately expose a hidden past, and reveal events that poignantly illustrate how synonymous true friends and family can be.
Neap Tide is the first novel written by D.S. Shumway, and his inspiration came from raising his own children, and from the close friends and family he grew up surfing and sailing with along the southern California coastline.
As a self-proclaimed "jack of all trades and master of none", D.S. Shumway has worked in a variety of fields, and owned and operated a number of small business enterprises. But the dream of becoming a published author and making a career of writing continued to beckon to him.
In the spring of 2007 he began to put his thoughts on paper, and soon had the beginning of a story, but didn't begin writing in earnest until the summer of 2010.
The first draft of Neap Tide was completed in late 2011, and then sat dormant, as he lacked the confidence to further the work, and couldn't convince a publishing company or literary agent to take it on.
The dream and manuscript remained untouched for about a year, but then found new life when a manuscript was distributed to others for feedback. The response to this limited distribution was extremely favorable, and D.S. Shumway was urged to pursue publication of the story, even if it had to be through self-publication channels. However, still lacking the confidence that the story should ever be published, D.S. Shumway shelved the manuscript, and the dream was put on hold.
The manuscript was once again brought to life in late 2014, and given a final edit in the spring of 2015. Neap Tide was then published for the first time in April of the same year.
