Jayde is a 14 year old thief trying to scrape by without the city of Haynis crushing her dreams. She would love to learn more about the world of magic, but Haynis is a city filled with miscreants, cut-purses, and thugs, not Talented individuals. That is, until late one night three men start chasing her with crossbows, and Jayde learns sometimes a little knowledge can be deadly.

About the Author:

Brandt Trebor has been a writer ever since first grade, where his dissertation "I'm going to be a circus performer when I grow up" was quite well received. In fact, he was even made “Special Person.” Granted, every student became special person, but Brandt knew this was just the start. Insert 30 years and a multitude of career pursuits, and the full circle completed with him writing yet again. Though he mainly writes young adult fantasy, he also enjoys reading. He mainly reads young adult fantasy. He also plays ping pong, loves hard cider (go Vandermills!), and considers himself a gamer, despite his continued losses in Starcraft2, Hearthstone, Catan, and a wide variety of board and video games. He also love Ultimate Frisbee and traveling. Most importantly, he loves his family, because if he did not put that down here, his wife would find out and he would most certainly be grounded. Seriously, he would get a 3 day time-out or more.

Judge's Commentary:
THE ROAD TO GRANDEUR by Brandt Trebor is an enchanting fantasy offering that will appeal to both young adults and adults. A superb entry into the fantasy genre!

The cover is striking. I like the idea of the eyes capturing two different images, front and back. But with it, the author sacrificed the chance to entice more readers through a brilliant back cover blurb, and to tell potential readers a little about himself. It would have been great to see endorsements on the front or back cover. I'm assuming since this is Book 1, the author will find endorsements in the future! I did appreciate that the author included his web site address on the back cover and since information was otherwise scant, I visited it. My favorite part was the author's biography. Very cute. I liked being able to learn more about the author and his work there. I realize that no one leaves the house today without carrying a phone with Internet capability so they could visit the site before deciding whether or not to buy, but I'd still like to see more info written on the book all the same.

The book is written in a very lively and engaging style. We are put right into the action and pages keep turning. The idea of conjuring up pies was especially fun. I wish I could conjure one now! All in all, a great book that Trebor's audience will love. I feel confident the second book won't disappoint.
