Foreword Conceived by a recent incident concerning my energetic, fun loving yet mischievous 16 year old nephew. What started out as an open letter to him and to share with his friends turned into this mini-booklet. While writing I thought how many other young boys need to hear this. Targeted at young males, 10-21 years of age, though any male, any age can relate. I purposely wrote this book to be short and straight to the point. Nowadays, with the onslaught of technology; Wide Screen TV’s, Internet, I-Pads, I-Pods, I-Phones, Video Gaming Systems, Social Media such as Twitter, Facebook and Texting, when it comes to actually reading a book I know the attention span of our young people is shorter than an ant lying down. Intent on waking up our youth and with a goal in mind to encourage, inspire, uplift and mostly, teach. It is my aim that this booklet get into the hands and hearts of every young male living in this diverse land of opportunity. Far too many of our young boys are being held hostage by social ills that plague our society. Gangs, guns, senseless violence, drugs/alcohol abuse, suicide, depression, hunger, health and sexuality issues, sexual, mental and physical abuse, bullying, rebellion, homelessness, inadequate school systems, etc. The list goes on. However, by now you may very well know a child that is victim of at least one of these problematic matters. Instead of living long, vibrant, healthy lives our youth are dropping out of school and/or being incarcerated, hospitalized, institutionalized and buried at an astounding rate. As responsible adults, we cannot continue to simply sit and watch as the enemy wrecks havoc in the lives of our young males. More so the reason to get a copy of this booklet into their hands. By writing this book and teaching our sons what it means to become a man is my attempt to win back our males and restore their positions as leaders. Our future kings need to be ushered back to the throne made vacant by their predecessors-their brothers, fathers, uncles and grandfathers. As a Christian man, myself, I wrote this booklet with the biblical principle found in 1 Cor. 13: 11. For those individuals which feel that they do not have a positive male figure to lean on, I pray the instructions found in this booklet help fill in the missing void of a strong male role model absent from their lives. It is my sincere desire that every male, young and old alike become the man God has called him to be-including my nephews. Thus, by doing so we can change the world starting with one male at a time. Gary’s hobbies includes writing, cooking, collecting and listening to music, chilling with family/friends and watching nature. Gary says, he also enjoys positive conversation and a good debate. “If I had to choose one word to describe myself it would be creative. I am a very creative thinker that loves problem solving of all kinds. It is one thing to notice a problem and start pointing fingers looking for blame, however, it is more important to identify the root cause and start searching for solutions.” Thus, this book, Becoming a Man. Instead of focusing on who or what are the reasons parents are struggling with wayward rebellious youth, I would much rather play a pro-active role and help do something about it....starting with changing the world-one male at a time. Gary Lenard Malone in memory of my daughter Kiare Le'Shea Madden.
