Im Sommer 2008 war ich mit meiner lieben Freundin Edythe aus Cottage Grove im Urlaub in der Overleaf Lodge in Yachats, Oregon. Eines Tages lasen wir dort lustige Fabeln auf den Platzdeckchen in einem kleinen Lokal. Wir wanderten von Tisch zu Tisch, sahen uns die verschiedenen Fabeln an und lachten. "Kizzie", kündigte Edythe feierlich an, "diese Woche werden wir jeder eine eigene Fabel schreiben!" Und diese Woche wurde zauberhaft - ein Tag war schöner als der andere! Ich überlegte, wie ich diesen Zauber wohl in eine Fabel verpacken könnte. Es war wunderschön, täglich neue Dackel und ihre netten Familien kennen zu lernen, bei außergewöhnlich niedrigen Gezeiten den Strand entlang zu wandern und dabei faszinierende neue Meerestiere zu entdecken, sowie drei Tage lang Buckelwale zu beobachten, die gut sichtbar knapp unter der Meeresoberfläche schwammen. Edythes Idee mit der Fabel umzusetzen, war für mich eine ebenso große Freude wie Herausforderung. Das Ergebnis How Dachshunds Came To Be ist Edythe Ann Stromme gewidmet, einer wunderbaren Freundin, von der ich unendlich viel über die Bedeutung von Freundschaft gelernt habe. Back in the summer of 2008, while vacationing at The Overleaf Lodge in Yachats, Oregon, with my dear friend Edythe from Cottage Grove, we read fun Tall Tales on our placemats at a local eatery. We went around the tables looking at the various Tall Tales and laughing. "Kizzie," Edythe exclaimed, "this week we will each write our own Tall Tale!" As the week unfolded, each day was more magical than the last. I contemplated how my Tall Tale might reflect the joys of the week. Daily I met new dachshunds and their friendly families, enjoyed beach walks with exceptionally low tides exposing fascinating new sea creatures, and for three days there was a pod of humpback whales that spouted and skimmed just below the ocean surface within easy viewing. I completed Edythe's assignment, both a challenge and a delight. How Dachshunds Came to Be was the fruit of this endeavor and it is dedicated to Edythe Ann Stromme, the kindest of friends and the one who taught me how to be a friend.
