Claude Monet painted Impression, Sunrise (Impression, soleil levant in French) in Paris in 1872, depicting the port of Monet's hometown, Le Havre. This work is credited with inspiring (in a hostile and satirical review by the critic Louis Leroy) the name of the Impressionist movement.
