About the Author:

Dr. Douglas J. Fiore is a Professor of Education at Virginia State University. He received his Ph.D. in Educational Administration and Supervision from Indiana State University, and he currently holds a Virginia Postgraduate Professional License in Administration and Elementary Education, as well as a Virginia Superintendent's License. A former teacher and principal, Dr. Fiore has worked as an Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership at the University of West Georgia and at Virginia Commonwealth University. He has also served as the Director of Professional Practice with the Virginia Department of Education. Dr. Fiore is the author of six educational books, two of which are bestselling textbooks that are widely adopted at colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Additionally, Dr. Fiore has written over a dozen peer-reviewed articles, and he has served on several editorial boards. Dr. Fiore is a frequent presenter at national and international conferences on issues related to school-family partnerships, leadership improvement, and communication in educational settings.

Dr. W. Weldon Hill earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in music education from Virginia Union University and both the Master of Music degree in composition and Doctor of Philosophy degree (as a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow) in musicology (music theory) from the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. Additionally, he was a graduate assistant at Virginia Commonwealth University. His post-doctoral work includes a Certificate in Higher Education Management from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education Management Development Program as a Plan for Social Excellence Fellow and participation as one of 29 American Council on Education (ACE) Fellows Class of 2000-2001. Having been appointed Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Education at Virginia State University (Petersburg) in 2003, Dr. Hill is now responsible for management and development of the VSU's largest school (enrolling over 2,200 students) and its first doctoral program in educational leadership.

Review:

"I truly loved the "Who Are You?" questions. The reason I say this is because several themes emerge such as identity, self- introspection, reflection, personality, and self-perception. This activity allowed the student to tap into those areas while addressing the questions. I definitely would use these questions as a dialog with my students."

"I would describe this book as an essential component that should be required for all orientation courses at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. It talks about what a HBCU is and what makes an HBCU special. It would make one proud to attend an HBCU."
