Book Description

William Dwight Whitney (1827-94) was the foremost American philologist and Sanskrit scholar of the nineteenth century. This 1867 work brought recent German scholarship to a wider Anglophone audience. He deals with English and its variants (including American English), the Indo-European language family and methods of linguistic research.

About the Author

The late William Dwight Whitney was Professor of Sanskrit at Yale University, Knight of the Prussian Orden Pour le Merite, Corresponding Member of the Academie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres of the Institute of France, etc., and Editor-in-Chief of "The Century Dictionary: An Encyclopedic Lexicon of the English Language".
