9781118814383: Handbook on GCC Banking and Finance: A Guide to Developments in the Gulf Countries (Wiley Finance)

The book will provide a comprehensive source of information on the banking and financial industry in each of the GCC countries, viz Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman. It will include a broad survey of the GCC banking industry, focusing on certain comparative and contrasting features. The country chapters will cover the key components of the financial industry in the respective countries and major trends and challenges.

The banking industry in GCC has some interesting features which are common and several which are unique to the country concerned. GCC economies are essentially emerging economies characterized by strong economic growth to varying extents fuelled by the oil and gas sector. The financial industry in each GCC country plays a critical role in mobilizing domestic savings and facilitating economic activity. Increasingly, several major financial institutions are moving beyond the national boundaries to be active in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and are also expanding their footprint in the fast growing Asia Pacific region. The major banks are also quick to emulate best banking practices common to international banks and conform to the international standards of Basle and other international requirements. Increasingly this is being augmented by greater sophistication by the banking regulator in various GCC countries. Application of technology to enhance efficiency of the various banking platforms for the distribution of banking products and services is a continuous process among leading GCC banks.
