From the Back Cover:

Bringing noted historian Steven Lawson’s classicpresentation of the ongoing struggle for racial equality in theU.S. into the new millennium, the fourth edition of Running forFreedom details the history of African-American civil rightsand black politics from 1941 to 2014. This edition features a newchapter on the election of Barack Obama as the firstAfrican-American president in American history, an event thatmarked the culmination of the long struggle of African Americans togain the right to vote and political power in the nation that hadonce enslaved, segregated, and disfranchised them. Lawson exploresthe idea that Obama’s two presidential election victories didnot in fact herald a race-neutral or post-racial blind society. Heshows us that race remains a polarizing force in American politicsand society, and that gaps in racial equality between whites andblacks persist—and in many instances have widened. Otherupdates to the text include the impact of the controversialZimmerman acquittal in the Trayvon Martin murder trial,50th-anniversary commemorations of the historic 1963 March onWashington, the Supreme Court’s recent weakening of theVoting Rights Act, and more. Told with eloquence and scholarlyprecision, Running for Freedom, Fourth Edition, is anindispensable resource on America’s continued quest of racialequality and harmony.
