This is the story of The Making of the Queen ElizabethOlympic Park by the Olympic Delivery Authority. Situated in eastLondon adjacent to Victoria Park, one of the world’s earliestpublic parks built in the 19th century, the Park provides aninnovative blueprint for contemporary urban park design and isrecognised as an exemplar sustainable development for the 21stcentury. As a primary legacy of the London 2012 Olympic andParalympic Games, the Park was conceived as a new piece ofsustainable city, transforming a largely neglected, contaminated,post-industrial district, into a new community for up to 20,000residents, shifting the centre of gravity of London eastwards.

Written by those at the heart of the project, it drawssignificantly on contributions from the many experts who haveshaped and guided the creation of the Park, including interviewswith the key players responsible for delivering the project. Itprovides the only authoritative account of the planning, design andconstruction of the Park beginning with the bid to host the games, setting out its historical, philosophical and physical context;describing the strategic fit within the Thames Gateway, Lower LeaValley and Stratford City; explaining how One Planet Livingprinciples developed by WWF and BioRegional underpinnedsustainability throughout the project; and concludes with a‘Walk in Park’ capturing its essence for both Games andLegacy.

Richly illustrated, it is a unique reference for those involvedin the planning, design, delivery and management of sustainableurban parks and new communities on post-industrial and other land, and those seeking to host future Games and other large-scaleinternational events.

Review:

provides the only authoritative and true account of how planners and designers built, landscaped and planted the greenest Games in history. (Pro Landscaper, January 2013) This is a coffee table book with a difference-once picked up there is no desire to flick through and put it down more to leave the room and ask people not to disturb you all I can say is read it, love it and learn from it. This book makes me proud of us as a visionary, planning and working nation than the Olympics did as sporting one! (Building Engineer, March 2013)
