Providing a complete description of modern tactical military communications and networks technology, this book systematically compares tactical military communications techniques with their commercial equivalents, pointing out similarities and differences. In particular it examines each layer of the protocol stack and shows how specific tactical and security requirements result in changes from the commercial approach. The author systematically leads readers through this complex topic, firstly providing background on the architectural approach upon which the analysis will be based, and then going into detail on tactical wireless communications and networking technologies and techniques.

  • Structured progressively: for readers needing an overall view; for those looking at the communications aspects (lower layers of the protocol stack); and for users interested in the networking aspects (higher layers of the protocol stack)
  • Presents approaches to alleviate the challenges faced by the engineers in the field today
  • Furnished throughout with illustrations and case studies to clarify the notional and architectural approaches
  • Includes a list of problems for each chapter to emphasize the important aspects of the topics covered
  • Covers the current state of tactical networking as well as the future long term evolution of tactical wireless communications and networking in the next 50 years
  • Written at an advanced level with scope as a reference tool for engineers and scientists as well as a graduate text for advanced courses

From the Author:

This book is presented in three parts as follows:
Part I is composed of four chapters, which focuses on theoretical basis. Chapter One is an introductory chapter. Chapter Two discusses the physical layer as it relates to tactical radios. Chapter Three discusses the DLL layer and Information Theory in the context of tactical networks. Chapter Four covers the MAC and Network Layers as they apply to tactical networks, with some focus on Queuing Theory.
Part II is composed of three chapters and focuses on the evolution of tactical radios. In Chapter Five, legacy radios are presented with Link-16, as an example of its generation of spread-spectrum frequency-hopping radios. The Tactical Internet with IP touch points is introduced as well. Chapter Six covers the IP-based tactical radio, with a focus on the JTRS WNW waveform as the representative of its generation of radios. The Global Information Grid vision is introduced as the natural evolution of the Tactical Internet. Chapter Seven covers cognitive radios as the futuristic generation of tactical radios.
Part III is composed of four chapters and is dedicated to the open architecture model of tactical networks and the seamless interoperability between tactical and commercial technologies. Chapter Eight introduces an open architecture model for tactical networks. Chapter Nine details some of this open architecture model's ICDs and the deviations from the commercial model that require add-on functions to the different protocol stack layers. Chapter Ten is dedicated to the integration of commercial cellular technology into the tactical theatre. Chapter Eleven discusses the challenges of network management and Network Operations in tactical networks.
I certainly hope this book helps the different readers to get a better grasp on the very complex problems of tactical wireless communications and networks. I also hope that this text can contribute to the advancement of the field.

From the Back Cover:

Uniquely presents tactical wireless communications andnetworks from an open architecture modelperspective

Providing a complete description of modern tactical militarycommunications and networks technologies, this book systematicallycompares tactical military communications techniques with theircommercial equivalents, pointing out similarities and differences. The author methodologically leads readers through this complextopic; first providing theoretical background on the protocol stacklayers as they relate to tactical wireless communications andnetworking, second cover legacy, current and future tactical radio, and then going into detail on  the open architecturechallenges.

The book covers legacy non-IP tactical radios, IP-based tacticalMobile Ad-hoc NETwork (MANET) radios, the place of cognitive radiosin future tactical communications, as well as the use of  corenetworks in the tactical theatre. Also presented are the JointTactical Radio Systems (JTRS) and other waveforms in the largercontext of the Global Information Grid (GIG). This in-depthcoverage enables readers to reflect on the security and NetworkOperations (NetOps) challenges, the need for cross layersignalling, the hypothesis of merging some protocol stack layers, and the techniques that are unique to tactical communications andnetworking, allowing them to move on to further practical andtheoretical considerations.

Key Features:

  • Covers the current state of tactical networking as well asthe future long term evolution of tactical wireless communicationsand networking in the next 50 years
  • Furnished throughout with illustrations and case studies toclarify the notional and architectural approaches
  • Written at an advanced level with scope as a reference toolfor engineers and scientists as well as a graduate text foradvanced courses
