A tap is brought out at the first turn, giving one-third of the full voltage of the winding. Objection might be made to the fact that the hightension winding is an auto-transformer, and when the 100-per-cent tap is used a high potential is established across the entire winding. If the coil is properly insulated and the contacts shielded no trouble will be experienced. This transformer has sufficient capacity for testing 150 ampere watthour meters, and may be used without introducing errors due to low power-factor. This device is mounted in a box 7% by 7% by 7 inches and the complete apparatus weighs 15% pounds. Universal Load Box Types:--The Universal Load Box (Fig. 367) is a device of the transformer type and has been designed to meet the various requirements of watthour meter testing. The Type "H" load box is suitable for testing both 110 and 220 volt watthour meters of from 5 amperes to 75 amperes capacity, two-or three-wire; being equally suitable for watthour meters of either the low or high capacity. The high-tension side is wound in sections to obtain series, and parallel combinations for no volt and 220 volt circuits. A rotating type, indicating switch is provided, and the high-tension side is thus adapted for circuits of either voltage. A pointer on the switch arbor indicates the voltage for which the load box is set. The hightension winding is connected directly across the line. The entire winding is in circuit at all times when testing, thus producing a constant core loss. The maximum wattage consumed at full load is 60 watts. The low-tension winding is separated into two independent ranges, one having a capacity of ...
