Not illustrated. 1895 Excerpt: ...be, the From Gambit can hardly safely be played in answer to the King's Bishop's Pawn two, and the value of this important opening will become further enhanced. Mr. Evelyn's variation is as follows:--1 P to KB 4 1 P to K 4 2 P takes P 2 P to Q 3 3 P takes P 3 B takes P 4 P to KKt 3 This appears the right move; the attack which has been feared arising from P to KR 4 and P to KR 5, as shown by Mr. Evelyn's variations, can be effectually met and White remains with a Pawn more and a superior game. The illustrative games, especially four contested at the Hastings Festival, are extremely interesting. 4 P to KR 4 5 B to KKt 2 5 P to KR s 6 P to Q 4 6 P takes P 7 P to KR 3 7 Q to KB 3 (Played by two young masters against Mr. Evelyn and H. E. Bird, but not deemed satisfactory.) 8 Kt to KB 3 (with much the better game) Kt to QB 3 and P to K 4 have to be considered. My defence P to Q 4, B to Kt 5, and Q to Q 3, is not so good as Mr. Evelyn's. Variation--Mr. W. J. Evelyn. 7 P to KB 4 8 Kt to QB 3 8 P to KB 5 9 Q to Q 3 9 Kt to K 2 10 Kt to K 4 Black's Bishop at Q 3 disposed of, then one principal feature, which renders Black's attack so formidable disappears, leaving him with an inferior position even if he maintains the Pawn at KKt 6. See play at Hastings, January 15 to 21, 1895:--Bird v. Blackburne; Bird and H. Chapman, ...
