Section D (sample 20495) was cut at 1 crosscut, 2 room, 2 right heading, 2 left entry, 3,750 feet N. 40 W. of drift mouth. Section E (sample 20496) was cut from west rib of 7 room, 1 right heading, 2 left entry, 3,700 feet N. 45 E. of drift mouth. An ultimate analysis of a composite sample made by combining samples 20342 and 20343 is given under laboratory No. 20346. The room-and-pillar system of mining is used. In 1914 the cpal was undercut by hand, and shot down with black blasting powder during the shift, by the miners. The output was about 350 tons a day, half of which came from advance workings. About 80 per cent of the coal was recovered. All of the coal was shipped as run of mine. There was one loading track with a capacity of 25 empty and 19 loaded cars. The lifetime of the mine was probably about two years. There was 35 acres still unmined. Carnwath. Carnwath No. 2 Mine. Analyses 20338 to 20341 (p. 77). Bituminous coal, Windber field, from Carnwath No. 2 mine, a drift mine, in Jordan Township, 2 miles southwest of Carnwath, on the Potts Run branch of the New York Central R. R. Coal bed said to be D or Moshannon; Carboniferous age, Allegheny formation. Bed averages 3 feet thick and lies practically flat. Roof, shale; floor, soft smooth clay, from which the coal parts readily. Material from the roof and floor did not become mixed with the coal in mining. Cover at points of sampling, 70 to 165 feet. The bed was sampled by E. H. Denny on December 4, 1914, as described below: Sections of coal bed in Carnwath No. 2 mine.
