THE UNIT OP WEIGHT. "wk have now got a plan for a new system of measures of length, surface, volume, and capacity, and all these measures are based upon our first unit fa. But we are still without one very important part of the new plan which we propose to make. We are accustomed to speak of "Weights and Measures," and so far we have said nothing at all about those measures which we call "Weights," and which are really Measures of Weight, lit is to the measures of weight, or "Weights," that we must now give our attention. Can we get our measures of weight from the same unit from which we took our measures of surface, volume, and capacity? As a matter of fact we cannot, for when we come to a question of weight other things must be taken into account as well as the dimensions of the thing to be weighed. For instance, two objects of the same dimensions may have very different weights. A block of wood will weigh less than a block of lead of the same size. The density of the object weighed must In this well-known phrase the word Weight is employed as equivalent to Mass, and will be used in that sense in the text. be taken into account as well as its dimensions. But though we cannot make our measurements of length.and surface perform the whole of the task, we can make them very useful when we come to settle our unit of Weight. Let us suppose that we have agreed to make fa, A Z, an(l A our units of linear measure, a...
