Not illustrated. 1910 Excerpt: ... people could no more gather manna freely at morning, every man according to the number of souls in his tents, as Moses had commanded, but every man must needs seek permission of some stockholder to gather in his fenced field upon the terms which the stockholder in his wisdom did deem the best. And since the stockholders were so mightily occupied in the meetings of their corporation, and since many were needed to build fences and make hedge-rows, it befell that every man who gathered, for his stockholder did he gather, and his stockholder, after that he had taken out as much as he thought he could use himself, and conveniently waste, and as much as would feed the men who built fences and did other personal service for him, gave back unto the hand of him who gathered the manna a portion of it for himself and for his family. And the times were very good because that all were employed working full time, and the men who gathered had almost enough to keep soul and body together, while the stockholders had so much that they had to work overtime in devising schemes to get more by getting rid of what they had. And these very virtuous men did now and then tear themselves from their arduous labors and went up and down among the people, exhorting them to thrift and industry, and showing the scars upon their own arms and legs which they themselves had suffered when they also were under task-masters, from which lowly position they had lately risen by their own endeavors. Moreover, they did convince the people that, though they were now themselves task-masters, none did work as many hours as did they.
