9781137339430: Religion and the Cold War (Cold War History)

Although seen widely as the 20th century's great religious war, as a conflict between the god-fearing and the godless, the religious dimension of the Cold War has never been subjected to a scholarly critique. This unique study shows why religion is a key Cold War variable. A specially commissioned collection of new scholarship, it provides fresh insights into the complex nature of the Cold War. It has profound resonance today with the resurgence of religion as a political force in global society.

About the Author:

Dianne Kirby is a Reader in History at the University of Ulster. She is acknowledged as having made a decisive intervention in the history of the Cold War by her pioneering scholarship on its religious dimension. In addition to publishing widely on the topic of the 'religious cold war', now recognised as a sub-genre in the field, she is also a member of the co-ordinating committee of the global research project, 'Christian World Community and the Cold War'. This innovative endeavour has brought together international scholars and ecumenists to study how Christians around the world met the challenge of the East-West conflict to the witness and service of the universal Church.

Book Description Palgrave Macmillan. Paperback. Book Condition: new. BRAND NEW, Religion and the Cold War, Dianne Kirby, Originally published over a decade ago, Religion and the Cold War was a groundbreaking contribution to Cold War scholarship that established beyond doubt that there was a significant religious dimension to the Cold War and that it mattered. The re-publication of these original pioneering essays is testimony not only to the way in which they have withstood the test of time and to their continued relevance, but above all because they are important contributions to the scholarly debates that are now taking place around the subject and which have implications that stretch far beyond academic enquiry. These explorations of the 'religious cold war' remain of profound importance, touching as they do on the relationship of religious institutions with temporal power, which is longstanding, intricate and varied, sustained not only by claims to command life's purpose and meaning, but also the provision of answers to men's deepest questions.
