9781138878136: Chronology of the Cold War: 1917–1992

More than just a timeline, the Chronology of the Cold War is in-depth chronological narrative organized into sections. Each section carries a clear date and summary heading. The five major sections are

I. Cold Peace, 1917-1940
II. The Strange Alliance, 1941-1945
III. Containment and Détente, 1946-1975
IV. Confrontation & Conciliation, 1976-1991
V. Epilogue

Based on sections of the Chronological History of U.S. Foreign Relations (Routledge 2003), the book includes significant additional material on Russia, China, arms control, and the Cold War in the Third World. This easy-to-use reference also includes an introductory section reviewing the history leading up to the Cold War from 1917 to 1945, a general bibliography of resources on the Cold War and is illustrated with photographs from presidential libraries and 18 maps.

About the Author:

Richard Dean Burns, Professor Emeritus, California State University, Los Angeles, is an internationally recognized scholar who designed and edited the three-volume Encyclopedia of Arms Control and Disarmament (Scribners, 1993) that received national awards. Earlier, he co-authored Disarmament in Perspective, 1919-1913, 4 vols. (U.S. Arms Control & Disarmament Agency, 1968) and compiled Arms Control & Disarmament: A Bibliography (ABC-Clio, 1977) the first such modern bibliography. He authored Evolution of Arms Control: From Antiquity to the Nuclear Age (Praeger, 2009) and The Missile Defense Systems of George W. Bush (Praeger, 2010). And co-authored Reagan, Bush, Gorbachev: Revisiting the end of the Cold War (Praeger, 2008), followed by America and the Cold War, 1941-1991: A Realist Interpretation, 2 vols. (Praeger, 2010).

From Booklist:

Shooting wars may have a long incubation, but their starting dates and ending dates--the latter either with cessation of hostilities or the signing of a treaty--can usually be stated with precision. What of the cold war's beginning and end? Brune's contribution to the reference literature on the cold war begins with the U.S.'s entry into World War I, in 1917, and concludes in December 1992 with the Khmer Rouge's undermining of the UN's peacekeeping efforts in Cambodia.

Brune breaks the cold war into four periods--one pre-World War II, one for the war years, and two post-World War II--and prefaces each with a short overview essay. More than three-quarters of the book treats the two later periods, during which the temperature rose significantly before cooling off seemingly suddenly with the collapse of Communist governments in Eastern Europe. Entries provide context for each event as well as interpretation of its political, military, or domestic significance. For example, entries from 1973 and 1974 note the distracting effect the Watergate hearings and looming impeachment of the president had on U.S. diplomatic efforts. Brune's chronology is truly global. The proxy wars and conflicts in Africa and Central America receive their due along with significant coverage of the U.S.'s long struggle in Southeast Asia.

Photographs and maps loosely associated with the text selectively illustrate the era. A bibliography organized by regions of the world, an appendix of biographies of major Soviet and Chinese figures, and a wide-ranging topical index complement the chronology itself.

Briefer chronologies can be found in The Cold War, 1945-1991 (Gale, 1992), The Cold War Reference Guide (McFarland, 1997), and The Columbia Guide to the Cold War (1998). Not only does Brune include more events and incidents but he also offers the fullest entries. This resource supersedes the other works' chronologies while complementing the rest of their content and is recommended for academic and large public libraries. James Rettig
