Having learned that the annual pilgrimage to the Jordan was about to take place, I determined to form part of it. One evening we left Jerusalem in a body, amounting, I should say, to ten thousand souls, headed by the governor, and escorted by his guards. After a journey of eight hours, over as wild and desolate a tract of country as it is possible for the imagination to conceive, and in many parts of which we were in no small danger of breaking our necks, from the rough and precipitous nature of the road, we arrived at Rihhah, a village erected, according to some, on the ruins of Jericho. Not far from this spot the fountain was pointed out to us, the waters of which were sweetened at the' intercession of the Prophet Elias. It issues from a rock, on the summit of which Christ passed forty days and forty nights, fasting and praying. We saw there the remains of a church, built to commemorate this event. Ascending to the summit of this rock, we had an excellent view of the country formerly possessed by the Amorites. Having filled our mataras from the sacred fountain we descended into the plain to our tents, which were pitched just opposite the place where Jericho anciently stood. A Bedouin sheikh, who was one of the escort under the command of the governor, pitched his tent close by the side of ours, and we soon established a friendly intercourse; for the kind and warm-hearted treatment which I had experienced from the Dryaah tribe, had produced a powerful and lasting impression on my mind in favour of these noble-hearted and simple-minded children of nature.
