Excerpt: ... THE EXPERIENCE AND MINISTERIAL LABORS OF REV. THOMAS SMITH. Carla ietorg. I Was born in Kent county, in the state of Maryland, on the third day of June, 1776. My. parents were members of the Church of England, and brought up their children in that way. I was baptized in Shrewsbury Church, where they held their membership. My mother was said to be a way-mark to heaven in her day: fond of her family, and kind to all. "She wiped the orphans' tears, And check'd their piteous moan." She taught me, when not over three years old, to say, " Our Father f and was instructing my infant mind in the principles of our holy religion, when it pleased the great Head of the church to say to her, "Thy work is done; enter into my joy, and sit down on my throne!" "Ah! silent in the grave she sleeps! But lives in paradise, to die no more." My mother died in the fall, and, in the spring following, the small-pox prevailing in the neighborhood, my father's family were all inoculated; but so mortal was the disease, that my father, two sisters, one brother, and three of the colored people, all died in ten days, and I barely escaped. Thus were three small children of us, by my father's last marriage, bereft of both our parents, having no home but heaven. But the promise of God cannot fail, "When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take me up:" for I was soon provided for by my aunt, who was careful and tender of me. But she was soon called to another and better world, and I was again left destitute of a home.
