Stovall, '81 (died since Conference), West Texas Conference. Dr. O. E. Brown was chairman of the important Committee on Missions, and was appointed by the bishops with Dr. Tillett and Professor Denny on the Committee for the Restatement of the Creed, which consists of five members in all. Of the three new bishops, Bishop Tigert is well known as an alumnus, and was elected in 1902 to the vacancy on the Board caused by the death of Dr. R. A. Young. Dr. Seth Ward preached the commencement sermon in June, 1902, and two years later was elected a member of the Board for a term of eight years. Dr. Walter R. Lambuth, elected for the third term as Secretary of Missions, was a graduate in the medical class of '77, and is prominent in alumni councils. Dr. E. B. Chappell, pastor of McKendree Church, elected to succeed Bishop Atkins as Sunday School Editor, entered as a freshman in 1875, and graduated in four years with the B.A. degree, and is influential in University affairs. Rev. J. R. Nelson, who succeeds Bishop Ward as Assistant Secretary of Missions, was a student in the Biblical Department from 1879 to 1883. Dr. Gross Alexander, who succeeds Bishop Tigert as Book Editor, was formerly Professor of New Testament Greek in the Biblical Department. It is a matter of pride and an honorable boast that the Church finds so many of those whom it elevates to positions of prominence and responsibility among the ranks of the alumni of Yanderbilt University. ORATORY AND DEBATE. The annual contest of the Southern Inter-State Oratorical.Association was held in Tuscaloosa, at the University of Alabama, on May 2, and was won by Charles E. Rice, of that institution....
