Alonso de Contreras (Madrid, 6 de enero de 1582-1641). Espa a. Militar, corsario y escritor espa ol, escribi su Vida. quiz a instancias de su amigo F lix Lope de Vega. De origen humilde, Alonso de Guill n Contreras tom el apellido de su madre al entrar en el ej rcito. Muy joven acuchill de muerte a un compa ero de estudios y cumpli un a o de destierro en vila. Despu 's sirvi como criado en casa de un platero, pero su car cter rebelde lo llev , a los catorce a os, a alistarse en el Ej rcito de Flandes, hacia donde parti el 7 de septiembre de 1597. Pronto abandon su unidad para dirigirse a Palermo y embarcarse en las galeras de Pedro de Toledo, que luchaban contra los turcos y los piratas berberiscos. En 1601 recibi el mando de una fragata y se le encomend vigilar las islas griegas y espiar las actividades de los turcos, cuya lengua lleg a dominar. En 1616 regres a Espa a para volver a la persecuci n de piratas berberiscos, lo que le vali que los turcos pusieran precio a su cabeza. Durante un tiempo fue gobernador de la ciudad de guila, al norte de Italia. Tambi n asisti a una erupci n del Vesubio y salv a un convento de monjas del desastre. En 1630 se retir y escribi sus memorias, publicadas en 1900.
