Colonel Simmons has a well-developed sense of humor and likes to tell anecdotes and crack jokes with his friends. In other ages this man undoubtedly would have risen high, for he has an imposing and majestic presence and great ability. Common sense, calm judgment, and a vast experience dominate his every action. There is at all times surrounding him an air of dignity, and he is at the same time affable to all. His disposition is kindly, and' he possesses a courageous and charitable heart. Colonel Simmons is a fearless man, and he has never paid attention to the innumerable anonymous communications threatening his life, which the Klan is continually receiving in Atlanta. He goes about Atlanta unattended and unarmed the same as any citizen bent upon his daily business. Before and after the congressional investigation, however, his host of friends insisted that some precautions be taken to prevent his assassination, which was threatened by numerous signed and unsigned letters. So against his protests guards were provided for his home, and for the Imperial Palace, headquarters for the Klan in Atlanta. These guards were mostly volunteers and members of the Atlanta Klan. They served in relays night and day. Colonel Simmons sprang from that sturdy Scotch-Irish and English stock that carved out a new government and a new land in the South and the West.
