We are told that when a sinner repents, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God; and though there are some things in the purposes of God hidden even from them, yet do they feel the liveliest interest in all that concerns the glory of God and the good of man; "which things," says the apostle, "the angels desire to look into." Thus is the will of God done by holy angels in heaven: our Lord teaches us to pray that it may be done in like manner by men upon earth. He would have us desire and ask that the will of God may be done, not partially and imperfectly, but completely; not after an earthly pattern or standard, and not merely in such a degree as would seem sufficient to the men of this world, but after a heavenly fashion, and in a heavenly degree. He would have this to be the measure of our desires, our prayers, and our endeavours,--" as in heaven, so in earth." In heaven the angels wait around the throne to do the will of God: even so should we desire and pray that men may wait continually to know and do what God wills. In heaven there is no reluctance or delay in doing God's will: even so let all upon earth be perfectly willing and ready; never questioning what God commands, or wishing that his will were less strict, or his laws less holy; never doubting, hesitating, or putting off, but giving always a prompt and hearty obedience. Thus, in all things, and by all men, let the will of God be done in earth as it is in heaven. So we are taught to pray. It is not so much the greatness or littleness of the service that God regards, as the way and spirit in which it is done.
