"One place there is--beneath the burial sod, Where all mankind are equalized by death; Another place there is--the fane of God, Where all are equal who draw living breath." Let the pastor labor to bring his people up to the work of filling God's house with the poor and the humble, and of looking less to private interests and tastes than to the common good. To generalize a little upon this not altogether unimportant topic of the church edifice, we would say that the character of the building depends upon the place and upon the circumstances of the people; and that it is far better, in many cases, that there should be a small and inexpensive edifice, than one which is clearly beyond the pecuniary means of the community, and which can be built only by incurring heavy debt.
