When my spirit was overwhelmed within me then Thou knewest my path.--Psalm Cxlii. 1--3. Our heavenly Father loves to hear our prayers: He has bidden us to pray. Many precious promises teach us the value of prayer. Especially ought we to pray in time of trouble. Sorrow, and distress, and sickness should teach us to pray more earnestly; so should we learn to be simple and outspoken in our supplications, having courage to breathe forth the feelings of our hearts. Prayer may be a talking with God. And the more simply childlike is our 78 The Comfort of Prayer. communion with Him, so the more surely shall we find grace to help in time of need. No matter how plain our language, with what broken expressions. Howsoever ignorant we may be, we can speak of ourselves; and the simple outpouring of the soul's feelings is what will do us most good and best please God. Such is His love, that He invites us to speak unto Him as little children do unto their parents. Oh that I could come more boldly unto the throne of grace! Oh that I felt more the privilege of speaking unto God! Poor sinner that I am, yet the All-mighty and All-holy promises to hear my words! In the name of Jesus I may call upon God, sure that, in a good way, He will answer me! Blessed exhortation,--casting all your care upon Him; for He careth for you.
