But the Lieutenant believed that under certain conditions this great cavern could be entered by a boat. At certain times, depending on the state of the tide, Merlin's Home might be entered, he believed, though the general idea that prevailed on this subject was that no boat could survive the attempt to pass through the serried rows of sharp rocks known as the Nettle-bed that guarded the entrance to this cavern. Some of the old people of the village remembered that such an attempt had been made long ago by a party of young gentlemen, and they declared that not one of the party had returned. Their boat had been smashed to pieces before it had succeeded in working its way through the outer row of rocks beneath the cliffs. The Lieutenant disregarded this story, and he made up his mind that during the spring, when there would be some chance of a perfectly calm day, he would make an attempt to find out whether or not there was any L available channel through the rocks by which Merlin's Home could be entered. If the Polwbeles succeeded in running their boat between the mouth of the cavern and the enormous boulder which was supposed to block up the entrance, the craft could defy observation. A man might be suspended by a rope from the overhanging cliff, and yet be quite unable to catch a glimpse of the boat where she was lying. Into this place the officer was strongly inclined to believe the smugglers were accustomed to run when in an emergency; and if they knew of this place and its secret channels, why might their knowledge not extend to other parts of the coast?
