The reducing flame is the proper one to use as the combustion must be complete and there must be no excess of oxygen or carbon. The gases must be in correct proportions and the acetylene valve must be throttled until the luminous greenish envelope around the white jet just disappears. Speed is another prime requisite to make a good joint, uniform and smooth, and the flame and solder should be run along the joint at an even speed. To make a lap or butt joint, between two sheets, the autogenous methods should be used in the manner described above. Automobile bodies of Aluminum sheets are welded by this method, making a one-piece body having an absolutely flush-sided surface. Before starting to weld, the edges of the pieces to be joined must be cleaned and squared and a certain clearance left, which clearance will close during the work. After the edges have been prepared and placed in the exact position wanted, the flame is applied just long enough to make the solder thoroughly fluid in the joint, and the joint permitted to set before moving the pieces. Care must be taken that the pieces do not move while the solder is in a fluid state. FLUXES--For those who use fluxes when soldering, we give the following flux formulas: 96 parts Borax, 4 parts Sodium Bisulphate, Steric Acid. 33% Potassium Chloride, 33% Lithium Chloride, 33% Sodium Chloride. 79% Potassium Chloride, 16% Sodium Chloride, 5% Potassium Bisulphate. 83% Potassium Chloride, 17% Sodium Chloride. 56% Potassium Chloride, 23%% Lithium Chloride, 10% Cryolite, 6%% Sodium Chloride, 4% Sodium Bisulphate. 62%% Potassium Chloride, 21% Lithium Chloride, 12%% Sodium Chloride, 4% Potassium Bisulphate. 45% Potassium Chloride, 30% Sodium Chloride, 15% Lithium Chloride, 7% P...
