Adrenalin vyrabatyvaet·sya khromaffinnymi kletkami mozgovogo veshchestva nadpochechnikov i uchastvuet v ryealizatsii ryeaktsiĭ tipa «byeĭ ili begi». Yego sekretsiya rezko povyshaet·sya pri stressovykh sostoyaniyakh, pogranichnykh situatsiyakh, oshchushchenii opasnosti, pri trevoge, strakhe, pri travmakh, ozhogakh i shokovykh sostoyaniyakh. Dyeĭstvie adrenalina svyazano s vliyaniem na α- i β-adrenoretseptory i vo mnogom sovpadaet s effektami vozbuzhdeniya simpaticheskikh nervnykh volokon. On vyzyvaet suzhenie sosudov organov bryushnoĭ polosti, kozhi i slizistykh obolochek; v menʹshyeĭ stepeni suzhaet sosudy skeletnoĭ muskulatury.
