For it was very, very disappointing to think that her plan had failed, that the Queen had never read, and would certainly never answer, her appeal, and that for several weeks she must make up her mind to do without mother. The great tears stood in her eyes, and her lip quivered. Tardie was going on steadily with his bread and butter; he was too young to take his mother's absence much to heart, but Judy did not understand this, and only thought that he could not care much about mother, if he could go on eating his breakfast without taking any notice of what was in the letter. She left her own almost untasted, and sat on the edge of her chair looking very unhappy, which Nurse at once observed, but was too wise to remark upon at the moment. Only, when breakfast was over, she followed Judy to the window, where the child stood looking out into the park with a very glum face, and stooped down to kiss her. "The time will go quicker than you think," she whispered kindly, "and mother is just as sorry as you are that she can't come yet." And then Judy perched herself upon Nurse's knee and had her cry out. After which she had to bathe her eyes in a great hurry, for fear Tardie should know what she had been doing. She thought it a very babyish thing indeed to cry, and was always ashamed of herself afterwards; but, as Nurse said, in this case there was nothing to be ashamed of, for it was very natural she should miss her mother.
