Excerpt: ... been given to understand had formerly been a Prison, and on a new County Prison being built, the Messrs. Thorntons had taken the old Prison and altered it iuto a large boarding school for boys; and in consequence of his mother getting into pecuniary difficulties, his father came to Horsham and paid his schooling and brought him to London with him, where he was then residing. It was quite positive, by his own recollections, that he was placed by his father at a Boarding School at Wandsworth, kept by a Mr. Tempest, and that he was a parlour boarder, and while there, he slept in the same bedroom where the daughters of Mr. Tempest slept, and that he remained at the school during holidays, when the other boys went home to their parents, during which time bis mother came and took him away from the school, and brought him to the place where she resided at 16, Vere Street, Regent Street, in May, 1794; and it was from her residence that he saw the Illuminations for "Lord Howe's Victory, The Glorious 1st of June, 1794." It was from his own recollection that he made this declaration, "he not having gained the kuowledge of it from any other person who might have misled him on this subject." The Marquis then requested our father to write a short narrative of what he thought the truth, and give it to the Abbe Prince de Broglie. The Marquis then invited him to call upon him any morning before 12 o'clock, when he should be always most happy to see him. Our father then wrote a short memoir of what he thought had occurred to him, and left it with the Abbe Prince de Bros;lie. Some time after this he received a note from the Prince. de Broglie, of which the following is a translation: "Sib--I pray you to be kind enough to accept my excuses.
