Excerpt: ... SERMON IV. THE BENEFIT IS GREAT. BY THE REV. G. E. JELF, M.A., CANON OP ROCHESTER. AUTHOR OF "SECRET TRIALS OF THE CHRISTIAN LIFE." "He that eateth My Flesh and drinketh My Blood hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. For My Flesh is meat indeed, and My Blood is drink indeed. He that eateth My Flesh and drinketh My Blood abideth in Me, and I in Him."--S. John VI. 54-56. These are the words of our Saviour Christ. They seemed, at the time, an hard saying, and "many of His disciples went back, and walked no more with Him." But those who truly loved and trusted Him, and felt that His words were " the words of eternal life," and that, if they left Him, they had no one else to go to, waited patiently awhile, and presently, just before He died, the hard saying was made plain to them, and they knew that in what He had said, they had the pledge and promise of His Resurrection and of theirs, and of everlasting life in Him, as the Incarnate and crucified and risen "Lord of all." Acts x.'36. For " in the same night in which He was betrayed, He took bread, and when He had given thanks, He brake it, and said, This is My Body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of Me. Likewise also the Cup after Supper, saying, This Cup is the New Covenant in My Blood; this do, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of Me."t The hard saying had become a blessed command; and in fulfilling it, they would have the great possible comfort, in union with Him Who was just going to His Death for them, but Who would rise, and die no more. For the continual remembrance of that one Sacrifice of His, and of the benefits which men should receive thereby, He had first foretold, and then appointed, a Sacramental Feast to be kept for ever in His Church--a festal Sacrame...
