This reproduction, however, should be prefaced by an explanation of the method which the Anglo-Saxon translator has followed in paraphrasing his original. As the method is the same in all cases, the subject can best be illustrated by a specific example and I will select for the purpose Ps. 33, only omitting here the alternative mystical interpretation of the Latin commentary, as that is not used in the case of this psalm. The Anglo-Saxon translator had before him in his original, first, the argumentum, then the Vulgate superscription for the psalm, as follows: Argumentum. Ezechias, victo Assyrio, semper Dominum benedicere promittit et angelum adjutorem sibi precatur immitti, moxque ad exemplum sut cunctos in Dei laudem provocat.... Psalmus David cum mutavit vultum suum coraru Abirnelech et dimisit eum et abiit. Exegesis, p. 651.
