In looking over some of the foregoing inventions, it occurred to me that a less radical modification of the present barbette carriage might be made to answer the purpose equally well if not better than either of those described. The results of some investigations in that direction are shown on Plate X, which represents the proposed changes for a 10-inch carriage. It will be seen that the only essential modifications of the present carriage consist in lowering the forks of the rear traverse wheels, raising the front support of the chassis, cutting a triangular piece off from the top carriage so as to retain the gun at its present level when in battery, and introducing a pulley and wire rope for a counterweight. The pintle is made larger and a vertical hole is drilled through its axis and the pintle block, to admit the rope leading to the counterpoise. In order to clear the muzzle of the gun when fired at a depression, the crest of the parapet is cut away slightly at those points where the gun projects furthest over it. With these exceptions, the whole arrangement may remain as it now stands. The work of manoeuvring and loading the gun will be the same as at present, excepting that the latter can be done under cover of the parapet. Numbers one and two of the gun detachment, standing with one foot on a level with the pintle block and the other a step lower, and leaning forward, as they would have to do to reach the muzzle of the gun, their heads would be entirely below the crest of the parapet.
